Answer these two questions.
1. What were Transcendentalists rebelling against?
2. What ideals in America today do you sometimes wish you could rebel against?

What is Transcendentalism?
Readers have asked this question often. Here's my answer:
When I first learned about Transcendentalism, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau in high school English class, I admit: I couldn't figure out what the term "Transcendentalism" meant. I couldn't figure out what the central idea was that held all those authors and poets and philosophers together so that they deserved this categorical name, Transcendentalists. And so, if you're at this page because you're having difficulty: you're not alone. Here's what I've learned since high school about this subject.
The Transcendentalists can be understood in one sense by their context -- by what they were rebelling against, what they saw as the current situation and therefore as what they were trying to be different from. One way to look at the Transcendentalists is to see them as a generation of well educated people who lived in the decades before the American Civil War and the national division that it both reflected and helped to create. These people, mostly New Englanders, mostly around Boston, were attempting to create a uniquely American body of literature. It was already decades since the Americans had won independence from England. Now, these people believed, it was time for literary independence. And so they deliberately went about creating literature, essays, novels, philosophy, poetry, and other writing that were clearly different from anything from England, France, Germany, or any other European nation.

These people rebelled againest any current situation to try and be different. Theres so many things id like to rebell against. The thought that if your not "normal" you wont be successful or have a good future. I believe as long as you make the effort anything is possible.

these people were rebelling against everything being the same they had wanted change to beable to stand out from other people. Maybe beable to change people's lives for good or bad. There are plenty of things I would like to rebel against but it may seem easy in theiory but in reality its not so easy. Rebelling can cause misschanges and not for the good so it should just stay the same for now.

They were asking questions on leadership and they also wrote in thories. The question if what they do is right and they rebelled in a reasonables matter that shows you can fight without violences. What they rebelled against change our way on life today becaues it open our minds to reason.

When I read it, it sounded like they were rebelling against literature. They were already independent as a country but they were all the time reading the same stuff. So people like Emerson and Thoreau starting writing poems, novels, essays, and other modes. They wanted to be unique.

Something I'd like to rebel against is the ideal of being an adult. You have to be a certain age to do anything. I know adults that shouldn't be able to do half the stuff that they have the right to because of their age. I feel like I'm old enough to do what I want. That I've went through enough to have my opinion of right and wrong. Or how I can't work some places because I'm not 18. I just think your age shouldn't define whether you're an adult or not.

These people wanted to be different, so they rebelled against everyone that was the same, they wanted to be unique in there own way. One thing i would rebel against would be that i wish certain right's were given to people earlier in their lives.

These people wanted to show that you didn't have to be like everyone else. They showed that you can be yourself no matter what or who you are. Something that i might rebel against is some of the homework that teachers give us.

1) Transcendentalism is a group of ideas in literature and in philosophy that developed in the 1830s and 1840s as a protest against the general state of culture and society, and in particular, the state of intellectualism and of the doctrine of the Unitarian church. Among the transcendentalists’ core beliefs was the belief in an ideal spirituality that “transcends” the physical and empirical and is realized only through the individual’s intuition, rather than through the doctrines of established religions.
2) If I was able to rebel against anything, I would rebel against the immigration laws. It takes too long, too much money and complicated paperwork to allow the average person a chance to visit relatives. My grandparents have been denied three times because of this overly strict and burdensome process. I would like to see these laws change that would allow easier and cheaper access for legitimate visitors to come here but still protect our borders.

The transcendentalist were rebelling against the normal everyday ideas. They wanted to branch out and be different. They let their ideas be heard and really individualized themselves.

Something I might rebel against as a 16 year old would be how long we have to wait to get our full license. I think that a whole year is a bit ridiculous when you think about how quickly our parents got theirs (6 weeks or so). I think the restricted license is a good idea for safety, but I don't think it's necessary to have that for 6 months and the permit for 6 months

The Transcendalists were rebelling against society. They want a simple lifestyle and want to be their own unique group of people.
I completely agree with Marissa. I don't think we should be defined as an adult by the age of 18. Some adults act like children. 16 and 17 year olds, if they are mature enough, should be able to work somewhere that you must be 18 or older to work at. Some of us want to get an early start in the "real world" and what better way to do it than to get a mature job?

The Transcendentalists were rebelling against everyday life. They wanted to be different about things, they didn't think that people should be the same, or do the same things.

If I could rebel againist anything, it would be the age that you have to be to get a real job, your permit, and your license. If you're responsible enough to be able to do these things, and if your grades are good, you should be able to do it whenever.

I think they were rebelling against society and how they think everthing we do should follow certain guidelines. The Transcendentalists wanted to be unique and different and wanted to not be socially correct.

If I could rebel against something I would rebel against the driving age. I think it should be up to the individual or parents to decide when your mature enough and ready to drive.

I think they were rebelling against society. Because they want to be their own person and do what they want to do, not what everyone else is doing. They wanted to be their own individual.

Sometimes I wish I could rebel against some rules or restrictions. Like, age requirments on simple jobs. Recently I've had a really hard time finding a job, so I have a strong opinion about it. I also wish I could rebel against my parents sometimes.

1.)Transcendentalists rebled against the thought and actions of being the same as everyone else. They believed highly in individuality.
2.)I fully agree with Marissa Clark. Most jobs you have to be 18 years old, making it impossible for most high schoolers to pay for anything. A lot of adults are just as immature as us teenagers, if not more. For the most part, your age should not define your capabilities.

One thing as a teenager that I would rebel against is the fact that we have to pay for parking at our own high school when most the time you don't even get the same parking spot as the day before, also having a curfew I like having fun and i could have more if we as teenagers didn't have a curfew on the weekends.

These people believed that you should be you, not every or anyone else. That no two people should be the same, like a uniqueness.

One thing that i personally would like to rebel against is the age you have to be to work at certain places. Yes, there might be good reasons for it, but that's what rebels do; fight for what they want, right?

But, age is just but a number. Until you start to talk about experience (in work experience AND life).

Transcendentalists were rebelling gainst the ability to creat a uniquely American body of literature. They deliberatly went about creating literature, essays, novels, philosophy, and poetry.

If i could rebel against something in America today it would be the amount of days that are required to go to school. Why should i be punished for having a low immune system and getting sick all the time from it and missing alot of school. I cant help that my body is like that, and i cant go to the doctor for every illness such as stomach virus, there is nothing the doctor can do for me so if i miss more than 3 days of school using only parent notes im going to have a few unexcused absences and mty parents/guardians can get in a lot of trouble for it, I think as long as the school knows that you are a child that hs a lot of health problems we should be allowed more parent notes.Another thing is the way our school handles leaving early, why do i get a full absence for missing 3 class periods? i did not miss a full day of school.

I believe that transcendentalists were rebelling against law, materialistic ideas, and society. They want to be their own individual and not follow any one else's rules. They just want to be themselves and live how they want to.
One thing I would rebel against is descrimination of age. Some individuals are more mature than others. I don't think age should define on what you can or cannot do.

Transcendentalists were rebelling against life and how society works. They wanted to be different from every one else. They wanted to be individuals and do things their own way. They could change the way things are today by being leaders and not followers. They want to live life just how they choose.
Something I would rebel against is the age you finally get to make your own decisions. Why should you have to be 18 to do things your own way? Some people mature faster and can handle things on their own today. I don't like the fact that I have to ask my parents permission to do anything. I should be making my own decisions and learn from them.

It sounds to me that there argument is about how they wanted to separate them selfsame from all the European countries and have there own thing.

I would rebel against the way how the parents think they "own" you. I as well as every other child does that your parents tell you what too do and you listen and be a "good" kid. But it's like when you get older you are involved in many sports and extracurricular activities and you get home and they tell you your not doing anything until you get your chores done or whatever the case may be and when it's all over they add on more stuff to do while they sit on the coach or in there room and do whatever I think we teens should have more of a choosing as to when to do something (not saying be a rebel)

Transcendentalist are rebelling against being different, like standing out in the crowd. They wanna be independent and do their own thing. :) Just do you, ya know. I would rebel against how parents treat their kids like they ten years old. You should be able to do what you want when you are mature. They shouldn't make you do what they say and they make your decisions, especially when your almost a legal adult. I think age shouldn't matter on whether your a adult or not, believe me I know some people that are in their twenties and act like they little kids...so it really should be whether your mature or not.

Nonetheless, through everything that I have personally seen, I really wish as the actual remarks pile on that people today keep on point and don't get started on a tirade involving some other news of the day. All the same, thank you for this exceptional piece and though I can not agree with the idea in totality, I value the perspective.
